Gartner wended his way over to the bar. Men stopped what they were doing as he passed, and one or two spoke to him. Their words were inaudible but their deference - and fear – was plain. Solomon saw Gartner stop and say something to the young man who seemed so out of place.

“Now there’s a sight you don't see in the Prospect very often!”
Nicolae’s musings were suddenly interrupted by this stranger, a man so tall and thin that he was almost skeletal. He was looking at Nic appraisingly.
“All clean and neat – I do admire a man who cares about his appearance. I bet you’re a likely lad who wouldn’t say no to a purse of sovs.”
