You have joined the party of a young nobleman, Lord Ethelbald Harring, who has acquired a small plot of land on the east bank of the Saltanow River and intends to settle a hamlet there. The cost of passage on the ship would be beyond your means, so Lord Ethelbald has agreed that you can serve him in Palania to repay the cost. Realising none of you are especially suited to a life of agricultural labour, he has asked Hogar to act as his bodyguard; Tole, his personal manservant; Leofric, his record-keeper and counsellor; and Edmund, his herald and messenger.
Your ship has a crew of twenty, most of whom, you discover, intend to finish their seafaring careers and join Lord Ethelbald. Along with yourselves, there are nine serfs on the ship who serve Lord Ethelbald, though your conversations with them quickly reveal that they have not been in service to the House of Harr before. Lord Ethelbald has said he was able to pay their lords to release them from service, and like yourselves they will repay him with their labour in Palania.
You set sail from the capital, Malagen, on 24th February, in the 227th Year of the Virian Way. Now, three weeks later, you are set to arrive imminently in the capital, Phalen, a city which, you are told, is still half controlled by monsters. However, on the day you are set to arrive a great storm hits, and your ship has been flung far off course, to the northwest of Phalen, near to a desolate region the Palanians name the Forlorn Coast.
