ANCIENT UNDERGROUND CITY UNEARTHED IN CAPPADOCIA National Geographic 2017 In a region of Turkey famed for its underground cities carved from volcanic rock over millenia, a new site has been uncovered which is likely to prove one of the most complex and best preserved, as well as the most ancient to be discovered so far. The existence of the city came to light following unusually heavy rains in this arid area, thanks to an observant Google Earth enthusiast. Jack Jenkins, who lives in Yorkshire, noticed anomalies on the ground indicating man made structures. After Mr Jenkins reported his discovery, a team from Ankara University made a preliminary survey and have already found items of interest. The site has been dated to the second millenium BCE, during the Bronze Age Hittite empire. Unusually the city appears to have been abandoned suddenly, with no sign of the continued use into the Christian era which characterises many of the other Cappadocian underground cities. So far only four levels of the city have been excavated, but many more are expected to lie below these. The standard of the stone carving and decoration, and the fine household items and jewellery found so far, indicate a high degree of wealth and comfort. The mystery of why this grand underground city was abandoned remains to be solved. Excavations will be resumed next year, with an international team under the joint leadership of Dr Helena Reeves of UCL Institute of Archaeology and Dr Osman Abdullah Balik of Bilkent University.
