Hoping this post isn't a problem and this is the right section of the forum.
Anyway recently, out of curiosity, I decided to check out some independent, free rpgs out on the net.
Here's a small list with link to download them of some I found
They may not be as complex or famous as D&D, Gurps or Warhammer, but some look like they could be genuinely fun.
I'm placing some comments - it's not a review, just some stuff I particularly liked or not
about the system after readying it. Only a few I read from the 1st to the last page, the most
I read quickly through to get a "feel"for the game.
So here's the list.
From www.cs.cmu.edu/~tpope/bostonia/frameset.html
RUNEBEARER(ADVENTURES IN THE WORLD OF BOSTONIA): Large, complex game. Uses d12. Interesting magic system, with
"marks"you get on your character's body.
from mythogames.150m.com/folder_01/games.htm
MYTHOS OF THE MAORI: Tribal non-european fantasy. Fairly interesting.
One thing I found particularly funny is being able to eat your defeated enemies to gain
part of their power.
WAYFARER'S SONG: I like this. The races, though they may basically
be just Humans, Elves, Dwarves and Giants, they manage to be fairly interesting.
DANSE MACABRE: "Dark"game set in fantasy Dark medieval europe. I skimmed through it, some
things look quite interesting, especially how magic is handled - you get the choice
to deal with Celestial, Fey and Infernal spirits AND then there are other forms of magic
like alchemy.
STONE OF SOULS: Mini game basically. I kinda liked having no human race, although I found it a
bit...childish for my tastes. Not bad though.
The following are from www.balbinus.com/
WARLORDS OF ALEXANDER: Historical game, though there's magic, gods-that-help-you and some other
fantastic stuff.
Rules are quite similar to Call of Cthulu, with percentile-based skills.
TOTEM: You are an hunter from a specific clan during the Ice Age. It gives you a specific ability - a "clan talent".
You are supposed to use real-life stones to use the simple binary mechanics, but you can also
use any dice which has the same chance of odd or even numbers(basically, not a d3). There's also
spirits and storytellers(NPCs only)which can give curses or blessing to characters..
ZENOBIA: Based on the Eastern part of the world during the later period of the Roman Empire.
Uses a simple system, rolling 2d6. Didn't like it too much, but perhaps that's because I'm not a
fan of too much simplification.
As of now, my favorites are Wayfarer's Song and Warlords of Alexander.
